In 1936, Will Hays introduced The Production Code. It was a set of guidelines meant to rein in the excesses of the day that were being portrayed on screen. All the major studios bought into The Code and the content of films going into the 1940's became much tamer. In this class, we'll be watching the films that inspired The Code. These are the Pre-Code films that made the major studios so worried about government censorship that they abided by The Production Code for the next three decades.
