W26-21 Home Grown Religions - Faiths Born in America NEW
Class | Registration opens 12/7/2025 9:00 AM EDT
There are hundreds of religions in the world -- and many began in America. This class will look at the early years of three faiths born in America. First, the Millerite movement which swept over much of the United States in the early 1840s, claiming Christ would return to earth on a certain date in 1844. But he did not do so, causing what was called “The Great Disappointment”. Second, the Mormons who were founded by Joseph Smith around the same time and have become a very large religion by our day. We will look at their early years -- a most amazing saga of a radical new church surviving strong opposition. And a big part of their history took place near here in Kirtland, Ohio. Third, the Pentecostal movement, now the second largest Christian movement in the world after the Roman Catholic Church. It started in a small way in the 1800s but exploded into the world in 1906 -- and has been growing ever since. There are congregations in your neighborhood that are part of these movements that began right here in America. In this class you will find out about the origins of their beliefs.
