History of the American Frontier and the Wild West - Part 2 NEW

Class | Registration opens 12/6/2026 9:00 AM EDT

Pam McConnell and Doug Imhoff will discuss the history of the American Frontier and the Wild West which encompasses the westward expansion of settlers from the late 17th century to the early 20th century. This period was marked by significant events such as the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the United States, and the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s. Pioneers faced numerous challenges, including conflicts with Native American tribes, harsh environmental conditions and the quest for land and resources. The Wild West era, particularly after the Civil War (which we cover in detail in this session) is characterized by lawlessness, the rise of outlaws and iconic figures like cowboys and sheriffs. Ultimately, the frontier experience shaped American culture, identity and the myths surrounding the West. This “Part 2 session” will also discuss individuals such as Kit Carson, Bat Masterson, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, the Dalton and James Gangs, Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane and many other characters.

  • NOTE: Class starts one week later (January 20 and ends February 24).
