Comte DeGrasse was the commander of the French Naval fleet that was instrumental in prohibiting British reinforcements from arriving at Yorktown to rescue Lord Cornwallis's army, which was surrounded by General George Washington's Continental Army and Comte Rochambeau's French Army, known as the Siege of Yorktown. His victory over the British reinforcements' supply fleet on September 5, 1781, forced the British to return to New York City, causing Cornwallis to surrender. This spurred peace talks to end the war. Who was DeGrasse? Why is he so important? We will answer these questions and more.
