Amateur Astronomy: Becoming a Naturalist of the Night

Have you ever wanted to be a "citizen scientist?" Come, see how you can through the science of astronomy from your own backyard at night. This course will cover the Top 10 Tips for Success in Amateur Astronomy, Exploring and Getting to Know the Sky Through Constellations, Binocular Astronomy, Choosing and Using a Telescope, Observation of the Sun, Moon, and Planets, as well as the Deep Sky. It will also touch on Electronically Assisted Astronomy and Amateur Astronomy Resources. The course will also include a demonstration of telescopes and binoculars, handouts, and example astronomy reference books.
Robert Powers
Robert Bruce Powers has been an amateur astronomer for 43 years and is an active member of the Back Bay Amateur Astronomy (BBAA) club which meets at TCC Virginia Beach. He is the club representative for the Astronomical League national organization. Bruce owns five telescopes and participates in four "star party" amateur astronomy events annually. He is a retired P-3 aircraft Naval Flight Officer and former celestial navigator in Navy P-3 aircraft. He has a B.S. and M.S. in Aerospace Engineering and an M.S. in Systems Engineering. He currently works as a test engineer for the Department of the Navy.
