June is a great month to visit the Virginia Zoo. Calling all fellow ILR animal aficionados to an Educational Walk-Through Tour of the Animal Wellness Campus. It includes a Veterinary Hospital and Diet Kitchen. The Veterinary Hospital is an 8,000 sq. ft. facility, constructed totally of recycled materials. It houses a holding area, surgery suite, lab, intensive care unit and pharmacy. The Diet Kitchen, a 2,500 sq. ft. kitchen, creates special diets and enrichment items, often incorporating the garden and fruit tree produce from the Zoo grounds. After our docent tour, continue to explore the Zoo, its gardens and Gift Shop. The Virginia Zoo encompasses 53 acres along the Lafayette River. Lunch is on your own and can be purchased at the Africa Village Restaurant or the Beastro.
