Dunes and Craters of First Landing State Park

Class - In Person & Zoom | Available (Membership Required)

The sediments around and under Cape Henry in Virginia reveal a dynamic geologic history. The large sequence of dunes and beach ridges which form the corrugated surface of First Landing State Park started growing more than five thousand years ago. Since then, it has had a surprising complex history of deposition and erosion. Far below the Cape, the enormous Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater disrupts regional aquifers. The blast from the impact, thirty-five million years ago, incinerated, and obliterated Eocene landscapes more than three hundred kilometers away from the impact.

Dr. Richard Whittecar retired from Old Dominion University after 40 years teaching geology courses and unraveling the million-year-old history of landscapes in the southeastern United States. He was born, raised, and educated as an NC Tar Heel and Wisconsin Badger. Between disc golf, pickleball, singing, seven grandkids, and a super-talented wife, retired life is great!
