Polar bears need sea ice, and that ice is melting because of warming temperatures. Although this fundamental challenge to the persistence of this species is clear, it is important to understand the nuanced reality of how the Arctic is changing and how polar bears are responding.

John Whiteman

John P. Whiteman, Ph.D., holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and an MS in Zoology and Physiology. He is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University, and the Chief Research Scientist of Polar Bears International, the only non-profit dedicated to polar bear conservation.
