VDOT Traffic Operations Center Tour
970 Reon Drive, Virginia Beach
Friday, January 23, 2026
Description of Tour: The VDOT Traffic Operations Centers (TOCs) serve as the nerve center of Virginia's traffic management system. These highly technological offices receive and process data in various forms to provide essential information that promotes safe, efficient, and reliable travel.
VDOT has taken on the responsibility of optimizing the efficiency of current roadways through the implementation of traffic management strategies.
A tour of the Hampton Roads TOC includes a brief presentation on what they do and some of the tools they use. We will then step onto the TOC floor and observe traffic operations in real time. Finally, we will walk outside and get to speak with an SSP patroller.
WHEN: Friday, January 23, 2026, 10:00 - 12:00; Registration deadline Tuesday, Jan 20th.
WHERE: VDOT TOC, 970 Reon Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23464.
PARKING: The facility is in a gated lot. Instructions for onsite parking will be forwarded closer to the day of the event.
COST: $2 Non-Refundable Administrative fee.
MAXIMUM: 30 people. People will be split into groups of 10 to 15 depending on total number.
CONSIDERATIONS: Dress for the weather! The tour involves an indoor and outdoor presentation of the VDOT operations. While the building is a single floor, anticipate the tour requiring standing, a few steps or minor incline in floor level. There, count on walking and some stairs just in case.
LUNCH: After the tour, you may want to have lunch nearby and talk about the experience. We recommend the Park Lane Tavern located at 1250 Fordham Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23464. Lunch is at your own expense.
