Benedict Arnold was the most brilliant general and officer in the entire Continental Army
command, winning key battles against British forces during the first five years (1775-1780) of the Revolutionary
War. He was adored by his troops, feared by the British High Command, and yet loathed by jealous American
generals who were less capable than he. Arnold became known as “The Fighting General” of the American
Revolution, keeping American hopes for Independence alive while other American military leaders were losing
battle after battle, demoralizing the quest for separation from Great Britain. What turned Arnold against the
American Patriot Cause? Was it money? Was it his young, beautiful, and demanding and extremely ambitious
bride, Peggy Shippen? Was it Greed? We will explore all these questions and more as we examine Arnold’s
military career, and motives of the real Benedict Arnold in this lecture.
