How Bacteria Resist Antibiotics

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria make it difficult to treat infections and are a growing medical
problem as more antibiotics lose clinical effectiveness. This class will focus on how antibiotics work, how
individual cells gain the ability to resist them, and how that ability spreads through bacterial populations.
Speaker: Erin Purcell, Ph.D., completed her doctoral work at the University of Chicago and her post-doctoral
training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and
Biochemistry at Old Dominion University. Her lab studies the different mechanisms determining antibiotic
effectiveness in the common 'superbug' C Diff.

Erin Purcell

Erin Purcell, Ph.D., completed her doctoral work at the University of Chicago and her post-doctoral training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
