In 1775 and 1776, Virginia’s royal governor, Lord Dunmore, emancipated hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of enslaved Americans if they would fight for the king. They clashed violently with American patriots in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach in the fall of 1775 and the winter and spring of 1776. This talk will focus on the dramatic events that took place in Tidewater which helped spur the founding of the United States--but were largely forgotten in subsequent centuries.

Andrew Lawler

Andrew Lawler is a journalist and book author who writes about history, cultural heritage, archaeology,
and a host of other topics. He is a contributing writer for Science Magazine, a contributing editor for Archaeology
Magazine, and his byline has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, National Geographic, and the
Smithsonian. Born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, he is also the author of four books, including A Perfect Frenzy:
A Royal Governor, His Black Allies, and the Crisis that Spurred the American Revolution.
