History of African American Communities in Princess Anne County

Drawing from the 1860 United States Census, in Princess Anne County alone, 3,186 individuals lived in bondage while 192 free blacks called the area home. Across Virginia, black communities took root in places like Negro Swamp in Princess Anne County. The history of African American Communities in Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach brings together the rich but fragmented story of the area’s African American heritage.

Edna Hawkins Hendrix

Edna Hawkins Hendrix is an author and local historian who has contributed considerably to chronicling
the history of Blacks in Princess Anne County (now Virginia Beach, Virginia). Her first book, Black History Our
Heritage: A Pictorial History of Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach, Virginia, is a compilation of Black
memorabilia, including many photographs and anecdotes depicting Black history and life in Princess Anne County
and Virginia Beach. Ms. Hendrix has earned numerous accolades and awards for her community work. She is a
board member and historian for the Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Alumni
and Friends Association, Inc. and has served on other related boards.
