"Jesus is Lord" sounds like a religious statement. In the first century, when the Roman Empire already had a lord and savior, it sounded political. This talk explores both how a movement whose founder and key leaders were executed by the state eventually found itself debating power, patriotism, empire, and Christian nationalism; and why questions of ultimate allegiance remain central to the challenges of holding a diverse people together.
