Where do rainbows come from? How was the world created? Why does evil exist? Members of the world’s earliest civilizations—and people today—often looked to gods and goddesses for answers to these questions. In this course students will learn the names, characteristics, and core stories (often focused on interactions with humans) of deities from Anatolia, Mesopotamia, Phoenicia, Canaan, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The course will highlight ancient burial practices, especially the role gods and goddesses played in the journey to the afterlife, and will examine archaeological remains of the temples, altars, art, and artifacts dedicated to ancient deities.
