This course explores the history of the United States from the end of World War II to the present through the lens of visual art, music, film, and popular culture. Students will examine how artists have reflected, challenged, and shaped major historical developments, including the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the rise of consumer culture, globalization, and contemporary social movements.

Doug Sheer

Douglas Sheer grew up on Long Island, N.Y. and after graduating from SUNY New Paltz joined the Peace Corps and served in the Marshall Islands for two years. He has been teaching social studies for over 30 years and became a department chair in 1987. He has taught A.P. U.S. History, A.P. Human Geography, and A.P. World History. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study celestial navigation in Greenwich, England in 1994. In 1996 he was asked by the American Federation of Teachers to instruct teachers in Slovakia about different methods of teaching democratic principles. He brings a love of history and art to his presentations.
