Montgall Avenue and the Remarkable Men and Women Who Lived There with Margie Carr

Hybrid (inperson & Zoom) | Registration closed 6/1/2026

In this class, students will learn about some of Kansas City’s most important leaders: the men and women who lived on one block of Montgall Avenue throughout the 20th Century. These leaders built and ran the institutions that served Kansas City’s Black citizens during the Jim Crow era. Early leaders saw the rise of segregation in the City, and later residents experienced the impact as Jim Crow was replaced with redlining, and we explore some of the impact those policies had on Montgall Avenue.

Margie Carr

Margie grew up in Kansas City, and has lived in Lawrence since 1992. Her early career was spent in the classroom before turning to writing when her kids were young. During a writing assignment, she learned about some of the men and women of Montgall Avenue and decided to turn this information into a book. Kansas City's Montgall Avenue: Black Leaders and the Street They Called Home was published by University Press of Kansas in 2023. Margie has a master's degree in Museum and a Ph.D. in Economic Education.
