Join us to see the  thousands of rock, mineral, gem and fossil specimens featured in the Richard L. Sutton Jr Museum of Geosciences, located on the third floor of the Miller Nichols Library at UMKC,  The museum was founded by Richard L. Sutton Jr., M.D., a renowned dermatologist with an avid interest in geology, mineralogy and fossils, especially ammonites. Our tour guide will be James Murowchick, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus in Geology at UMKC and Curator of the Geosciences Museum.

Meeting Place: Third Floor of Miller Nichols Library on the UMKC Campus, 800 E. 51st St., Kansas City, MO, outside of the Richard L. Sutton Jr. Museum of Geosciences.

Parking:
Park in the Miller Nichols Parking Lot. Your tour fee will include a virtual parking permit for that lot.  You can learn more about claiming your virtual parking at https://lifelongspark.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Parking-Permit-Tutorial.pdf.  You must claim the permit for it to be valid and to avoid receiving a parking ticket.  The permit will only be valid on September 25.

James Murowchick

 

Professor Emeritus in Geology (Geochemistry and Mineralogy) at UMKC and Curator of the Richard L. Sutton Jr. Geosciences Museum. He began teaching at UMKC in 1988 and retired in 2019 but is still active with the museum and in helping students in learning how to use various analytical instruments.
