“Stop laughing.” “Be quiet in church.” Did you hear such parental voices? The truth is that faith traditions around the world incorporate stories that align better with Teilhard de Chardin’s “Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God” and encourage laughter.
Join storyteller Sheila Otto to meet Islam’s Mulla Nasruddin, Judiasm’s Baal Shem Tov, Hinduism’s Tenali Rama, the sacred clowns and wise fools of many cultures and discover the humor that Jesus used that is often missed because of the familiarity of his stories.
This is an interactive class in which we will survey the laugh landscape and try on the power of ancient stories to awaken us. As you hear representative stories, you will check out how they challenge you to wake up, change perspective and laugh at yourself. “Start laughing and get talking” is the style of this class.
Sheila has been telling fun wisdom stories for decades in schools, churches and libraries, Lifelong Learning, even on the Hopi reservation. She is trained as an educator, counselor and spiritual director.
