Broken Made Beautiful

Class | Available

Kintsugi (“golden joinery”) is the ancient Japanese art repairing broken pottery with lacquer and gold. In kintsugi the repaired piece is viewed as stronger and more beautiful, healed and transformed. In this class we will practice the art by intentionally breaking a piece of simple pottery. Using epoxy and gold embossing compound, we will simulate the ancient art of kintsugi. After growing comfortable with the process, we will repair another piece that might have some history for you. The process of repair can be freeing. Mending, patching, transforming broken parts creates something new and beautiful. Conversation and noticing your own process will be encouraged in the class.

Registration Deadline: July 21st

  • Please bring the following items:

    1. A broken piece of pottery that you are eager to repair or are willing to break. If you do not have one, we will provide ample options for your selection.
    2. An old towel to encase a piece you will break as we practice before repairing your chosen pottery.
    3. A hammer (we will have some available if you do not have one).
    4. A tube of epoxy glue. E6000 is a popular choice, but you are welcome to bring your preferred brand.
