Interpreting Nature Through Woodcut Printmaking

Class | Registration opens 8/30/2026 8:58 AM EDT

Registration deadline: Sep. 7th

The class will begin by examining historical examples of woodcut prints and learn about the methods and means of their creation. Students will then be encouraged to explore a wide range of textures and forms found in nature (examples will be provided in the form of plants, tree bark, stones, insect shells etc). These objects will serve as inspiration for the class project.

The class will then be prompted to compose graphical images for print reproduction. Students will be encouraged to think topographically when constructing their images such that they can be reproduced through printing and carving and printing again. Each new layer of ink will both obscure and reveal parts of the preceding layer.

Student images will be composed of 2-4 color layers and the class will be instructed on how to plot out and execute a reductive matrix through wood carving. By the end of the course students will have a small run of reductive woodcut prints (10-12).

Kurtis Lutz is a visual artist based in the greater Toledo area. He specializes in drawing, painting and printmaking. His work illuminates miniature dreams, places frozen in time that beckon you in closer and permit your mind to wander their illusory landscapes.

  • Most supplies are included. However, students should come to the 1st class with the following:
    • Printed inspiration photo or image, if desired (maximum dimensions of 7.5" x 10")
    • A large old spoon (metal or wooden) that you don't care about getting ink on (the larger, the better - a serving spoon would be ideal)
Students will also need to purchase high-quality paper for their final project. The instructor will provide further guidance on this in class.
