Wine was not invented in France. Long before Burgundy planted its first Pinot Noir, winemakers along the shores of the Mediterranean were cultivating varieties that still exist today — in Turkey, Greece, Croatia, and Spain — largely unchanged and largely unknown to the modern wine drinker. This class is a journey to the cradle of wine civilization. Students will taste six red wines from Mediterranean countries, each made from an indigenous grape with deep roots in antiquity. This class reminds students that the wine world is far older, far wider, and far more surprising than the back label of a grocery store bottle would ever suggest.
