Some art is more than what initially appears, or what appears may hold symbolic meaning for those attuned to it. From the earliest visual representations, people have included both literal and figurative elements. Some of these figurative elements are almost universally understood, while others are unique to Western art or cultures within it. Be a sleuth while looking at selected works of art and discuss what you think the artist might be saying subtly. Many of the works presented are from the Toledo Museum of Art collection.

Carol Schwartz, Ph.D., loves to learn and finds it more fun to learn with others. She has taught students from junior high through graduate school, both online and face-to-face. After retiring from Lourdes University, Dr. Schwartz became a Docent at the Toledo Museum of Art, which allows her to combine her appreciation for art with a historical background to create a fuller perspective.
